The purpose of this research is to show a storyline and discourse structure of ≪Chui-Woo≫(1952) by Yeom Sang Seop. This work is set in Seoul under the regime of North Korean army and it reflects brutal life of people and several incidents for 6 months during Korean War. The sequential exposition of this work helps to show people’s everyday life and how they search for life conditions in the structure of ‘money’ and ‘love.’ ‘Money’ is means of exchange as a symbol of maintenance and continuance of life. By exploring human relations and their living conditions associated with money, it reveals war situations in our daily life. Also, it reflects the reality of life in the love triangle of ‘Yeong-Sik’, ‘Myung-Sin’, and ‘Soon-Jae’. It ultimately reproduces war situations under proper control of the writer while money and love works as a narrative power. It indirectly presents the reality as an ordinary person describes Korean war affairs. This narrative characteristic is proved by two aspects. The first one is the work shows people’s life indirectly but clearly represents the phenomenon at the same time by using metaphor. It helps to indirectly investigate the story in the separation of the narrator and focalizer. The other one is to reproduce war conditions in the narrative structure and discourse of the characters. It reveals the interactive narrative of the writer and the characters.
Abstract
