Abstract

This paper aims to examine the theme characteristics of Yeom Sang-seop’s short stories after Korean War, and to examine the writer's post-war reality and writer's perception through them. The period from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s is a period of “post-war” at the historical level, but the period of “late-year” at the authorial level. I would like to deal with the three major characteristics that stand out in Yeom Sang-seop’s short stories after Korean War. First of all, on the topic level, most young men and women-centered love stories have been transformed into drawing the deviations of middle-aged couples or female characters. And by dealing with the problems of “family” and “generation”, it was discovered that they attempted to figuratively portray changes in postwar reality through changes in family order. On the author’s part, he published his previously unmentioned “Navy Experience” series of short stories. These works seem to be autobiographical episodes, but at the writer’s level, their sense of “lateness” stands out and have important meaning in that they are confessional “autobiographical narratives.” Finally, the characteristics of ‘rewriting’ of the history in his short stories during this period were able to examine his historical consciousness that changed after the war. His contemporary writing, which continued even if he risked epic imperfections after liberation, was attempted to “rewrite” the history. By reinterpreting and re-contexting the huge historical event of the Korean War, he tried to portray the subtle differences of the change as a difference in “love story.” As such, Yeom Sang-seop’s short stories after the war clearly reveal different multi-layered characteristics, which is important to understand the whole world of his work.
