Abstract

The Journal of Studies in Language 22.2, 43-56. The goal of this paper is to analyze the discourse marker you know using data based analysis. Discourse markers are most commonly used as fillers of ambiguous time while the speaker thinks about what words he/she should say next. However, discourse markers, also serve other purposes. The discourse marker you know has many special functions in speech utterance, in addition to having various implicative meanings in its own position. In its initial position, in between and at the end of the utterance, the discourse marker you know has the correspondence of an introduction, a repair, an explanation, an agreement, and so on. It is necessary to understand this specific discourse marker because it facilitates communication by directing the listener towards the speaker's intended message. This paper shows the implicative meanings and distinctive features of the discourse marker you know within the specific corpus of sitcoms and movie scripts
