한국 정치문화 연구는 지금까지 많은 업적을 남겼다. 그것은 주로설문조사와 통계 분석을 이용하여 한국인의 정치적 태도를 연구하는것이 중심을 이루었다. 이러한 연구는 물론 중요하다. 하지만 그것만으로는 부족하므로, 한국 역사와 한국인의 행동에 대한 세밀한 관찰에 따른 질적인 연구가 뒷받침되어야 할 것으로 본다. 또 이러한 주류 정치문화 연구는 지나치게 미국 학계의 연구를 답습하여 미국 학자들이 제시한 지표를 거의 그대로 사용하거나 정작 한국 정치현실에서 중요한 문화현상은 소홀히 다루는 한계를 보였다. 미국학계의앞선 연구들을 도입하더라도 한국 현실에 대한 이해와 관찰에 입각하여 독창적인 연구도 동시에 수행해야 하리라 본다. 한편, 지금까지의 연구는 한국인의 정치적 태도나 가치관, 의식구조 등 ‘마음 상태’에 대한 조사에 집중하였는데, 앞으로는 실제로 그런 마음 상태가 한국 정치과정에서 어떻게 나타나는지에 더 많은 관심을 기울여야 할것이다. 이런 점들을 염두에 두고 한국 정치문화 연구는 기존의 연구경향에 덧붙여 새로운 방향으로 더 확대되어 가야할 것이다.
Abstract
Studies of Korean political culture has shown rather rich accomplishments but have generally been confined to statistical analyses drawing mostly upon how Koreans “think and feel”on various political issues. They also show the problems of overly depending upon the issues and research techniques derived from and developed in American political culture studies, thus failing to catch specifically on the “Koreanness” in their political attitudes and behaviors. Therefore, Korean studies on political culture should focus more on the particular and unique natures of Korean political behaviors and political structures, filling the gap left by American-based statistical analyses. This will not conflict with the necessity for seeking universality in any social scientific analyses, because the study of Korean uniqueness would by no means seal the possibility of comparative studies of different cultures, as some would worry. This will rather deepen and diversify the study of political culture of both Korean and foreign political cultures.
