Abstract
This study conceptualizes ESG management as an emerging business ecosystem rather than a corporate strategy, analyzing interactions among investors, firms, rating and consulting agencies, governments, and NGOs. Drawing on literature review and expert interviews, it identifies structural features and relational dynamics of the ESG industry, highlighting symbiotic, competitive, and parasitic interactions. The findings show that ESG has evolved into a global institutional norm driven by investor pressure and regulatory frameworks, while challenges such as inconsistent evaluation standards, SME cost burdens, limited disclosure reliability, and greenwashing risks remain. Comparative cases reveal the EU’s regulatory institutionalization, the U.S. market-driven diffusion, and Japan’s government–business cooperation model; whereas Korea is characterized by large-firm dominance and regulatory reliance. The study concludes that effective ESG integration requires international standard alignment, targeted SME support, transparent disclosure practices, and the development of a balanced cooperative ecosystem.
