Abstract
One of the most intriguing problems of Indian mythology is said to be the tracing of origin of the popular god Vāsudeva Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa, in the Ṛg Veda, is referred to as a demon as well as Indra’s enemy. He is believed, religio-historically, to be the (religious) leader of a dark skinned non Aryan tribes who fought against the Aryan hero Indra. In the Pāli Piṭakas, a mystic sage Kaṇha is mentioned as the originator of Kaṇhāyan clan. He is neither an admirer of the Buddhas nor a worshipper of the Veda, but is appeared to be an ancient non Aryan black ascetic whose characteristic is as tough as Vedic Kṛṣṇa. The Jātaka mentions a name Kaṇha, but his birth and activities are ambiguous. The commentary on this verse mentions the name Kaṇha and also Vāsudeva. The identity of Kaṇha and Vāsudeva is not apparent till the Jātaka period, however Kaṇha Vāsudeva is known as one ane the same person in the commentary. It means, at least at the time of Jātaka Pāli, Vāsudeva and Kaṇha might have been different entities, and this suggests itself that Kṛṣṇa and Vāsudeva could have been amalgamated artificially due to some reason. An attempt has been made in this paper that how these four characters, namely Vedic Kṛṣṇa, Piṭaka Kaṇha, Jātaka Kaṇha, and Kaṇha Vāsudeva in the Jātaka commentary, are connected in the history of Indian religion and mythology. The conclude is led that the god Kṛṣṇa is a deity who has emerged from the blending of various ideologies.
