Because of power conservation techniques commonly used in the design of wireless systems for the limited battery life of mobile terminal, the connectivity of a terminal in power save mode is restricted. All connectivity property that every terminal in the same shared medium LAN gets to be received by a single broadcasted frame would not be applicable in wireless environment, which makes it difficult to provide multicast based on traditional broadcast and filtering mechanism. In the popular IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard, all connectivity property is enforced at certain time intervals determined by a special interval value called DTIM. However DTIM mechanism consumes additional power for multicast even if there is no multicast traffic. We introduce a new multicast mechanism that does not require all connectivity property by scheduling a multicast frame with n-ary sub-multicasts. Our performance study based on computer simulation shows that sub-multicast scheduling mechanism achieves comparable service quality and performance with DTIM mechanism without any additional power consumption for multicast.
