A distributed heuristic clustering scheme for point-to-multipoint connection is proposed to minimize the transmission power for signaling traffic in two-tier mobile ad-hoc networks. The proposed scheme can be implemented and executed in real-time. Scheme performance is simulated and the results compared with those yielded by simulations of a previous periodic scheme. The mean energy consumption for signaling and the mean transmission power are used as performance measures. Numerical examples show that the proposed scheme uses a mean level of transmission power similar to the previous periodic scheme, with a much lower energy consumption for signaling.
