Abstract
The aim of this essay is to explore some new methodologies of studying dance history. Actually history always conflates, changes, and exaggerates aspects of past. And the historians' role is traditionally seen as one of both chronicler an interpreter. Even so, in the quest to establish what happened in the past, it is impossible to retrieve everything. Therefore, the historian is inevitably, also a selector with the responsibility for distinguishing the important from the trivial, the central from the peripheral. Moreover, the method of studying history has been changed rapidly these days. The old questions of the traditional analysis were what link should be made between disparate events ? How can a casual succession be established between them ? But they are now being replaced by questions of another type : which strata should be isolated from others ? what types of series should be established ? what criteria of periodization should be adopted for each of them ? Thus, nowadays, history abandoned its attempts to understand events in terms of cause and effect in the formless unity of some great evolutionary process. The key-notions required by historical research are no longer those of consciousness and continuity with their correlative problems of freedom and casualty, but those of the event and the series with the related notions of regularity, unpredictability, discontinuity, dependance, transformation.
