Abstract

This study ultimately aims at clarifying and affirming that considering moral education in schools should start from students' lives, not teachers' languages. And the specific aim of this study is to consider and conceptualize school as moral community, which might be actualized by teacher-student dynamic dialogue relation, coming from placing teacher in 'the' center when organizing schools as moral community. This study examines some issues and the methodologies in three theories; Jackson's research on moral life in schools, Kohlberg's just community approach, and Higgins' school culture approach. The author asserts the theories are lacking concrete guides and suggestions for practices. This study brings forward Freire's concepts, 'humility' and 'listening'. Listening is a kind of teacher's active performances in which teacher is leaving his own world and persistence, and stepping into student's unique world and position, always with getting out of teacher's authoritarianism, that is 'humility'. The deeper teacher's listening becomes, the thicker does his humility, and the greater his courage against dehumanization in the world gets deeply cultivated. This study suggests the conceptual consideration should be linked up with field research in schools. The reality of teacher-student dialogue and interaction must be thought of as the basis for school innovation, and the present teachers must face up to the reality. For this, it is necessary to record and analyse instructions, teachers meeting, and student counseling in schools.
