Abstract
This paper aims to examine the coherence of Esports advocacy, focusing on the issue of physicality. The main points and arguments are as follows: First, if pro- and anti-Esports arguments are based on a metaphysical materialism that defines physicality as muscle movement and calorie consumption, they may succeed in negating the distinction between Esports and traditional sports. However, this approach logically results in the denial of the boundary between sports and non-sports, as well as the physicality that defines sports as physical games. Second, drawing on the discussions of Suits (1973) and Paddick (1975), the physicality of sports should be understood as involving physical skills or movement patterns valued among participants. This concept embodies intrinsic constitution conceptually and non-delegability in practice. Third, Esports advocacy based on metaphysical materialism raises questions about unique physical skills, movement patterns, and systems of skills tied to constitutive intrinsicality, as well as the attribution of actions’ outcomes to an agent in relation to non-delegability.
