Abstract

This study explores whether e-sports should be classified as sports in relation to the characteristics of the physical skills involved. This article points out that existing debates on e-sports have become arbitrary by addressing this issue based on ambiguous and unclear distinctions between gross motor activities and fine motor activities. Instead, this study proposes purposiveness and coincidence as the key characteristics of physical skills in sports. In sports, physical skill is an end in itself, and its domain of execution coincides with its domain of application. In contrast, in e-sports, physical skill merely serves as a means to manipulate avatars displayed on the monitor, and there is a mismatch between its domain of execution (real space) and domain of application (virtual space). This study concludes that e-sports cannot be classified as sports because the physical skills involved fail to satisfy the characteristics of purposiveness and coincidence that define physical skills in sports. This research has academic significance in that it illuminates the challenges that modern technological developments pose to the definition of sports and it offers a new understanding of the essential characteristics of sports.
