Abstract

Lee－Tae－Jun’s works are often appreciated as “the perfect example of Korean short story”. So his thought on ‘So－seol’ has decisive significance in the history of concept upon ‘So－seol’. It can be said that his thought on ‘So－seol’ closely tied up with commonly accepted idea on ‘So－seol’ in these days His thought on ‘So－seol’ was based on the elemental approach. ‘So－seol’ is explained as a constitution of ‘character’, ‘plot’, ‘description’ and others. This way of thought, introduced by Hyun－chul and Kim－Dong－In in Korea, naturalized the universality of western novel. Lee－Tae－Jun’s practical critics deepened this naturalization. In addition he emphasized formal side of ‘So－seol’, the skills of making it true to life, namely the skills of ‘verisimilitude’ of western novel in 19th century. In this way, the forms of these novels became independent, and separated from the inseparable historical context, and became the ideal example of Korean ‘So－seol’. But that’s not the case that this thought on ‘So－seol’ apply directly to his creative works. Because the specific quality of his ‘So－seol’ continuously made the western novel relative thing, replace it on the proper place in the history. Theorizing these aspects of his ‘So－seol’ results in the 'Theory of ‘So－seol’, not the ‘Theory of Novel’.
