Abstract
In an era marked by the crisis of the global ecological system and the rapid technological revolution represented by artificial intelligence, what kind of hope can today’s young people embrace? This study examines the recommendations addressed to young people in Pope Francis’s Jubilee Bull Spes Non Confundit (Hope Does Not Disappoint, 2025), with the aspiration that all may live joyfully with God in their own circumstances and journey as ‘pilgrims of hope’. The current socio-structural reality makes it difficult for young people to cultivate openness and responsibility toward life, resulting in declining birth rates and the loss of the stability and fidelity inherent in true love. Furthermore, amid fierce competition and an increasingly winner-takes-all system, young people are exhausted by self-exploitation and yet still unable to secure stable employment. Through an analysis of exam essays, media writings, and discussions among Korean youth and university students, this study explores how they perceive these realities and what kind of life they aspire to. In this process, we encounter young people who affirm ‘invisible hope’, critically reflect on Korean society and the Church, and seek to walk in solidarity with others. Ultimately, the pilgrimage of hope for young people is far from easy. Yet through diverse experiences and challenges, they strive to establish their identity, build a just and peaceful society together with others, and live out their rightful and healthy claim to life and hope as human beings.
