동남아는 인도를 포함한 서역의 문화와 동북아시아의 문화가 오가는 통로이자, 북방의 대륙 문화와 남방의 해양문화가 만나는 접점으로서의 역할을 담당하고 있다. 이러한 점에서 동남아의 신화에 대한 연구는 세계 신화의 일부로서 동북아시아, 혹은 동아시아 신화의 성격을 파악하고 위상을 자리매김함에 있어서 매우 중요한 의미를 갖게 된다. 이 글은 동남아의 신화 가운데에서 홍수신화만을 연구대상으로 하며, 동남아의 홍수신화의 전체적 모습과 더불어 홍수신화의 지역적 특성을 살펴보는 것을 일차적인 목적으로 삼는다. 이 글에서는 동남아의 語族이나 민족기원 등의 차이를 감안하여 동남아를 크게 동남아 大陸部와 동남아 島嶼部로 나누어 살펴 보았다. 아울러 홍수신화를 구성하는 서사구조와 그 내용을 살펴봄과 동시에, 신화의 지역적 특성을 잘 보여주는 몇 가지 話素 및 그 에피소드에 주목하였다.
Abstract
Southeast Asia has performed a role of the passage between the culture of western regions including India and that of China and the meeting point between Northern continental culture and Southern marine culture. In this sense, the study on the myth of Southeast Asia carries significant meaning in understanding the character and positioning the status of the myth of East Asia as a part of the myth of the World. I investigated the flood myth and examined the overall aspect of the flood myth of Southeast Asia and the regional characteristics in this paper. I divided Southeast Asia into two parts, that is, Continental Southeast Asia and Insular Southeast Asia to make the point clear. In particular, I investigated the narrative structure and its contents of the flood myth and also paid attention to the elements and their episodes in the myth in that they show the regional characteristics.
