Abstract

Although Zhang Huiyan’s critical work, Zhang Gaowen(張皐文)’s Annotated Han Shu(Zhang Gaowen Pingdian Hanshu), remains relatively obscure, it possesses profound intellectual depth as a vivid embodiment of the interaction between the Tongcheng and Yanghu schools, as well as the cultural exchange between China and the West. Following the literary activities of Xiao Mu(蕭穆), Li Shuchang(黎庶昌), and Xue Fucheng(薛福成), the manuscript traveled both domestically and abroad, acting as a bridge for their friendship and a witness to their intersecting lives. Its eventual journey from Yang Fu(楊復) to Gu Tinglong(顧廷龍) and across the ocean further underscores its role in the foundational history of Chinese and American library collections. In this work, Zhang Huiyan provides a dual critique of the Records of the Shi Ji(史記) and Han Shu through three primary intellectual dimensions. By integrating the study of these two texts, he elucidates unique insights into historical methodology and literary technique, allowing these masterpieces to mutually illuminate one another. Guided by the Yu(虞)’s thought, Zhang further extracts the theories of "Internal and External"(內外) and "Language and Meaning"(言意) from his investigation, elevating them into analytical tools applicable across the traditional four branches of learning — Classics, History, Philosophy, and Literature — to establish a comprehensive academic system. Finally, driven by a commitment to "Statecraft and Utility"(經世致用), Zhang promoted a new scholarly ideal that fused literary and Confucian traditions, ultimately positioning himself as a pivotal figure in the academic transition of his generation.
