본고는 20세기 전반기 서양 곡이 우리나라와 일본으로 수용된 양상과 특징을 문학적인 측면과 음악적인 측면으로 나누어 살펴본 것이다. 본고에서 살펴본 서양곡 원곡은 《My Blue Heaven》과 《When It's Lamp Lighting Time in the Valley》이다. 먼저, 《My Blue Heaven》의 번안곡들은 대체로 가정의 소중함과 긍정성을 강조하여 대체로 원곡 노랫말에 충실하게 번안했다. 다만 《여로의 황혼》은 고향에 대한 그리움으로 의미를 확장하고 애상성을 강조하는 노랫말로 구성되었다. 음악적으로 볼 때, 일본 번안곡은 ‘모방’에서 ‘편곡을 통한 재생산’으로 발전하는 모습을 보여주었다. 그리고 장르도 스윙에서 폭스 트로트로 변하였다. 반면에 우리나라 번안 재즈송인 《여로의 황혼》과 《즐거운 내 살림》은 음악적으로 불안정한 측면이 있다. 연주하는 박자 길이가 일정하지 않은 점과 가수의 불협화음에서 이를 확인할 수 있다. 《When It's Lamp Lighting Time in the Valley》의 번안곡은 원곡 내용에 충실하게 번안한 경우와 개작에 가깝게 다르게 번안한 경우가 공존했다. 노랫말은 ‘사랑의 기쁨’과 ‘어머니와 고향에 대한 그리움’으로 이루어져 있다. 일본은 우리나라보다 번안곡 수가 많지만 노랫말의 내용은 단순해서 번안에 다양한 시도를 했다고 보기 어렵다. 이 노래의 한·일 번안곡이 지니는 음악적 특징은 다음의 세 가지로 나타났다. 첫째, 서양 곡의 영향을 크게 받지 않은 작품이 있다. 둘째, 한국 번안곡 중 일본의 영향을 받은 작품이 있다. 셋째, 당시 유행하던 음악이 번안곡의 편곡 스타일에 영향을 미쳤다. 본 연구는 한국과 일본 재즈송의 번안 양상을 통하여 동시대 대중음악의 수용·전파·향유 과정과 관계를 확인하였다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 특히, 《My Blue Heaven》의 한국어 판인 《여로의 황혼》을 처음으로 소개한 것은 본 연구의 성과이다.
Abstract
This paper examines the aspects and characteristics of Western music accepted by Korea and Japan in the first half of the twentieth century in terms of literary and musical aspects respectively. The original Western songs in this paper are “My Blue Heaven” and “When It’s Lamp Lighting Time in the Valley.” First of all, translated songs of “My Blue Heaven” were faithfully translated into the original lyrics in general, emphasizing the importance and positivity of the family. However, “The Twilight of Journey” extended its meaning to longing for one’s hometown and emphasized its sorrowfulness. Musically speaking, the Japanese version of the song showed a development from ‘imitation’ to ‘Reproduction through arrangement.’ In addition, the genre was changed from swing to Fox trot. On the other hand, the Korean translated jazz songs “The twilight of journey” and “My happy home” had musical instability factors shown by the fact that the length of the beat is not constant and the singer’s dissonance. There were two types of versions of the original version of “When It’s Lamp Lighting Time in the Valley” which were faithfully translated versions and rewritten versions. The lyrics are composed of ‘Joy of Love’ and ‘Missing Mother and Home.’ Japan has more number of original songs than Korea, but the lyrics are simple. Thus, it is hard to say that it has tried various versions. The musical features of the translated song appeared in three ways: First, there is a piece that is not greatly influenced by Western music. Second, there is a work that has been influenced by Japan. Third, the popular music of the time influenced the arrangement style of the original song. This study is meaningful in that it confirmed the relationship between the acceptance, dissemination, and enjoyment of contemporary popular music through the translation of Korean and Japanese jazz songs. In particular, this paper first introduced “The twilight of journey” which was the Korean version of “My Blue Heaven.”
