A Study on Digital Transformation in the Aviation Industry: Trends and Application

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the current state of digital transformation in the airline industry and explore the applications where digital transformation technologies are being utilized. Design/methodology/approach: Utilizing the Science Direct and Web of Science databases, we searched and reviewed the titles, abstracts, and keywords of articles written between 2016 and 2024, when research on Industry 4.0 began, using a combination of the keywords "air transportation," "airline," "airlines," "airports," "Industry 4.0" and "digital transformation" to remove duplicates. Identify the research objectives, goals, and main findings of the study, and finally select 68 research papers centered on digital transformation in the aviation industry. Findings: Industry 4.0 is the convergence of science and technology based on the digital revolution, leading to a paradigm shift in business, the economy, and society as a whole. The aviation industry has also set the standard for applying digital technology to effectively contribute to positive changes in consumer perception, experience satisfaction, and value creation, and is investing and transforming to streamline service operations through digital service platforms. Research limitations/implications: A limitation of this study is that it is based primarily on news articles and research papers written in English, and does not include literature or press releases from various languages and regions, which may not fully reflect regional and cultural diversity. Future research should expand the study by broadening the scope of the data to include cases from different languages and regions, strengthening the analysis from a global perspective. Originality/value: Existing studies on digital transformation in the aviation industry have focused on improving the logistics process through systems and functions for each element of the logistics process. Therefore, this study provides implications for the successful application of digital transformation in the aviation industry by broadly identifying the trends of the aviation industry in the era of digital transformation and analyzing the application characteristics in various ways, and provides directions for value creation and innovative development of the aviation industry in the future.
