Seo, Jeong-min. 2006. A Typological Analysis on On-glides [j] and [w]. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 31-3, 341-365. This study aims to show that typological distinction among on-glides [j] and [w] (hereafter on-glides) in the syllable structure results from constraint interaction. There have been three kinds of arguments about the position of on-glides of Seoul dialect, Jeonnam dialect, English, French, German, and Chinese in the syllable structure. The three arguments, Nucleus Hypothesis, Onset Hypothesis, and Tautosyllabic Hypothesis, consider the on-glides in the languages as part of nucleus, onset, and both respectively. The arguments, however, have provided conflicting accounts in reference to analogous evidence. Thus, in this study I argue that the position of on-glides in the syllable structure should be explained by Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky, 1993), based on constraints rather than rules as in Generative Phonology. Abstract
