Abstract

This study aimed to examine teachers’ perceptions of sports character education in physical education classes. Based on the importance of sports character items, the types of perceptions of elementary and secondary school physical education teachers were classified. The Q methodology was used to accomplish this research purpose. After confirming 35 Q samples and selecting 41 elementary school teachers and physical education teachers as P samples, the forced sorting was used to place the Q samples in the Q classification table. The PQ method version 2.35 program was used in the analysis process, and four recognition types were ultimately derived. Type 1 was a group that valued a ‘cooperative spirit and communication attitude’. Type 2 was a group that valued a ‘community spirit and honest attitude’. Type 3 was a group that valued a ‘cooperative attitude based on self-sacrifice and consideration’. Type 4 was a group that valued a ‘patient and confident attitude’. Although there were some differences in the factors of sports character that physical education teachers consider important, they agree on the necessity of promoting sports character through physical education classes. Therefore, joint discussions and efforts are needed to propose and implement more effective methods for sports character education.
