초록
Maga-tree (Sorbus commixta) has long been used as a traditional Oriental medicinal plant for promoting health, including enhancing immune function. In this study, we investigated whether the immune-enhancing effects of Maga-tree extracts are further improved when combined with four medicinal herbs. The combined extract (C-Maga) contained higher levels of phytochemicals than extract of only Maga-tree and licorice (O-Maga) and exhibited superior ferric-reducing antioxidant activity, although O-Maga showed stronger free radical–scavenging activity. Interestingly, C-Maga demonstrated greater macrophage and microglial proliferation than O-Maga. In addition, C-Maga enhanced macrophage pinocytosis and phagocytosis, effects that were not observed with O-Maga. Taken together, our findings indicate that C-Maga possesses stronger innate immune–enhancing activities than O-Maga.
