Abstract
This research analyzes gamified and emotional narratives of popular webtoon <Pyramid Game>. which converted into a drama, and explores viewer responses to this transformation. <Pyramid Game> is considered as a successful instance of content converted into a drama. This study focuses on how the original webtoon’s gamified narrative devices are strategically converted to the characteristics of the drama medium. According to the study, the webtoon <Pyramid Game> used the rule of pyramid game. The recipients of F grade are subjected to bullying and violence. This showcases the fictionality of social hierarchy and presents a discourse of critical perception. The ranking system was ‘visualized by grade’ by using elements like color, seating assignments, and details of uniform. Voting processes were visualized by using suspenseful background music. Complex games rules were produced with multi-dimensional effects by utilizing animation and graphics. Emotional narratives of characters demonstrate not just recreation of webtoon but also strategies of drama transformation. The use of ‘layering of emotion’ and ‘rhythm of emotions’ through actors’ delicate expressions, gestures, tones and gazes bring ‘spread of emotion’ effect, expanding individual growth narratives into messages of social alliance. From a genre perspective, the drama emphasizes its gamified genre by blending survival game elements of original webtoon’s school teen drama and violence narratives. As OTT platforms’ deregulation of contents, the drama transformation could realistically depict the cruelty of violence, expressing thriller tension. Additionally, the Girl’s Love (GL) elements between characters made as supplementary narrative which expands the categories of school dramas and contributes to formation of fandom, showcases mixture of genres. However, the analysis of viewer responses through YouTube comments has significant implications. Rather than the messages that the drama wants to convey or the value of its narrative, higher focus is placed on other factors like the actors’ acting skills, casting issues, and visuals. LDA topic modeling results further show tightly connected clusters of character-centric keywords, revealing that the reception of the drama’s narrative and thematic intentions is determined by the actors’ and characters’ combined appeal and popularity.
