본 연구의 목적은 웹소설에서 TV 드라마로의 각색에 있어 서사의 변화 양상을 분석함으로써 웹소설에서 타 장르로 각색할 때 대중성 확보를 위해 무엇을 고려해야 하는가를 고찰하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 웹소설 <내일의 으뜸>의 TV 드라마 <선재 업고 튀어>로의 각색 사례를 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 형식의 전환을 확인하였다. 첫째, 마니아적인 독자층을 대상으로 한 웹소설은 클리셰에 충실하지만, 더욱 폭넓은 시청자를 대상으로 한 TV 드라마는 보편적 플롯을 추구하므로, 이 웹소설의 로맨스 판타지 회귀 모티프는 이 TV 드라마에서 사랑의 마스터 플롯으로 ‘재초점화’된다. 둘째, 이 각색 작품에서는 원작의 구출 서사의 미흡한 부분을 보강하고 극적 흥미를 높이기 위해 전통적인 구출의 마스터 플롯이 도입되는데, 이를 통해 쌍방 구원 서사가 구현되는 ‘재강조’가 이루어진다. 셋째, 원작은 열성 팬덤 문화의 어두운 면까지 깊이 다루고 있어서 마니아적이지 않은 시청자층을 대상으로 하는 각색 작품에서는 수용자의 호응을 확대하기 어려우므로 아이돌 모티프의 이야기 틀을 그대로 유지하는 동시에 팬덤 서사를 순화하는 ‘완화’가 이루어진다. 본 연구의 의의는 이와 같은 재초점화･재강조･완화 등의 형식적 변화 과정에 항시 새로운 장르적 관습이 적용되므로 웹소설에서 타 장르로 각색할 때 대중성 확보를 위해서는 이처럼 관습과 관련된 ‘무엇’의 문제를 사전에 고려하여야 한다는 것을 사례를 통해 밝힌 데 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the narrative changes in the adaptation of web novels to TV dramas, and to examine what should be considered for effective adaptation of web novels to other genres. To this end, the case of the adaptation of the web novel Tomorrow's #1 to the TV drama Lovely Runner was analyzed, and the following formal changes were confirmed as a result. First, while web novels targeting a group of enthusiastic readers are faithful to clichés, TV dramas targeting a wider audience pursue universal plots, so the romance fantasy regression motif of this web novel is ‘refocused’ on the master plot of love in this TV drama. Second, in this adaptation, the traditional master plot of rescue is introduced to supplement the insufficient parts of the original rescue narrative and increase dramatic interest, thereby ‘re-accentuating’ the realization of a mutual salvation narrative. Third, the original work deeply deals with the dark side of fandom culture, so it is difficult to expand the audience's response in an adaptation targeting a non-maniac audience, so the idol motif story frame is maintained while the fandom narrative is purified and ‘softened.’ The significance of this study lies in revealing, through examples, that new genre conventions are always applied in the formal change process of refocusing, re-accentuating, and softening, and thus, in order to effectively adapt web novels to other genres, the problem of ‘what’ related to conventions must be considered in advance.
