Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between self-control and binge-watching food shows ("Mukbang") with the aim of identifying more effective dieting strategies. Self-control is essential in dieting, playing a crucial role in overcoming temptations for indulgent foods. However, self-control can deplete energy resources, potentially causing burdens during the dieting process. Therefore, this research aims to explore whether binge-watching food shows can serve as a means of self-control. According to the study, binge-watching provides an indirect food consumption experience, potentially aiding self-control without depleting energy resources needed to resist cravings. Particularly, the study suggests that the process of indirectly consuming food through binge-watching may lead to a decrease in appetite through satiation, and in some cases, it may even stimulate an increase in appetite through sensitization. The use of binge-watching as a means of satiation or sensitization depends on the strength of an individual's dieting willpower, which acts as a moderator. This manipulation is controlled through priming in this study. Consequently, the results indicate that while binge-watching can help individuals with strong dieting willpower reduce appetite through satiation, it may only stimulate appetite for individuals lacking such willpower, as confirmed through experimentation. As a result, it is expected that by offering practical strategies for individuals to achieve their goals more easily without depleting energy resources or feeling burdened during the dieting process, this research will contribute to the health and well-being of individuals.
