Abstract

Background This study aims to apply Project-Based Learning (PBL) to smart city design education in order to cultivate learners’ practical problem-solving skills and creative design capabilities. In particular, the study seeks to explore how PBL enables learners to apply smart city design principles to real urban challenges while fostering collaboration and critical thinking. Methods The research was conducted through a smart city spatial design project course offered in the spring semester of 2024. A total of 18 graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds and nationalities participated, organized into teams. Each team selected a specific Korean city as its case study and engaged in a step-by-step process that included site analysis, problem identification, and the design of solutions incorporating smart city technologies. The course followed the PBL model, with teams developing their projects through iterative presentations and feedback during midterm and final reviews. Result The findings demonstrate that PBL effectively supported students in gaining a deeper understanding of the urban context of their chosen sites and in proposing creative, practical solutions using smart technologies. Students were able to integrate multiple elements of smart city design into their projects, significantly enhancing their professional competencies and practical design skills. Conclusion This study confirms that PBL is a valuable pedagogical approach for strengthening creativity, problem-solving, and collaborative abilities in smart city design education. By engaging students in authentic problem-solving processes, PBL nurtures integrated thinking and practical expertise that are essential for applying smart city principles to real-world challenges. The results highlight the potential of PBL as an effective instructional strategy for advancing smart city design education.
