한국 언론에 나타난 한국, 중국, 일본의 정체성과 표상: 선진국 담론을 중심으로
The Identities and Images of Korea, China, and Japan in Korean Newspapers: Focusing on the Discourse of Seonjinguk

이 글에서는 현재 한국인들이 세계를 보는 가장 지배적인 해석적 틀인 선진국 담론 속에서 한국, 중국, 일본의 정체성이 어떻게 규정되는지, 어떻게 표상화하는지, 또 이들 사이의 위계관계는 어떤 식으로 가정되는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 전국종합일간지의 최근 10년간 사설들을 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 분석 결과, 국제적 사안에서 일본은 앞서 가는 기술, 핵심 일류기술을 소유한 선진국이자 역사 왜곡을 일삼는 국가로서의 정체성을 갖고 있는 반면, 중국은 요즘에 새롭게 부상하는 경제강자로서 국제사회 영향력이 확대되고 한국 등과의 기술격차를 좁혀가는 신흥국 또는 주요국으로서의 정체성이 주로 나타났다. 한국의 경우 ‘세계 10위권 경제 대국’이며 ‘지20 의장국’인 ‘신흥국(신흥경제국)’으로서 ‘일본과 중국 사이에 있는 샌드위치 또는 넛크래커 호두 신세’라는 표상이 가장 많이 나왔다. 각국의 국내 사안에 초점을 맞춘 분석에서는, 일본의 경우 역시 ‘선진국’이라는 지칭이 압도적으로 많았다. ‘선진국’ 일본은 국내문제에 있어 대체로 한국이 본받아야 할 ‘모범사례’, ‘준거기준’ 등으로 언급되는 경향이 나타났다. 중국의 경우 직접 지칭 단어로는 ‘인권후진국’이 가장 많았으며, 그다음으로 ‘지2(주요 2개국)’이었다. 서술에 나타난 중국 표상은 ‘뒤떨어진 인권, 민주화 수준’이 가장 두드러지게 나타났다. 이런 각국의 정체성과 표상은 중층적이라고 할 수 있다. 일본의 경우 ‘선진국’의 정체성이 뚜렷하지만 ‘역사 왜곡’을 하는 국가라는 표상이 이를 견제하고 있다. 반면, 중국은 선진국에 미치지 못하는 ‘신흥국’ 또는 ‘인권후진국’이라는 정체성이 강하지만, 요즘 급히 부상하고 있는 ‘주요국’이라는 정체성을 함께 갖고 있다. 이런 중첩적 정체성과 표상은 한국인들에게 이들 국가에 대한 우월감과 열등감, 위기의식 등을 동시에 불러일으키는 요인이 되고 있다.
Abstract
This paper examines how Korea, China, and Japan are perceived, their identities are defined, and their hierarchical relationships are determined in the frameworks of the discourse of seonjinguk, one of the most dominant frameworks for Koreans to interpret the world. For this, this paper has analyzed the editorials of nationwide newspapers in the past 10 years, which represent Korean public opinions. The analysis has found that the identity of Japan in the international dimension is mainly defined both as a seonjinguk possessing advanced and core technologies and as a country distorting history, while China is largely designated as a sinheungguk (emerging country) or juyoguk (major country) that is currently emerging on the international stage as a political economic power and narrowing the technological gap with Korea. Korea tends to be defined as a sinheungguk (or sinheung gyeongjeguk; emerging economic country) with an economic power ranked within 10 in the world and a chairmanship of the G-20, which is also sandwiched or caught like a nut in a nut—cracker between Japan and China. In the analysis focusing on each country’s domestic dimension, the overwhelming number of cases have defined Japan as ‘seonjinguk.’ Japanese domestic affairs tend to be referred to as exemplary cases or standards of reference, which Korea should emulate. For China, it shows that most frequent designation is ‘human right hujinguk,’ followed by ‘G-2.’ In terms of the images of China reflected in sentences, the ‘low levels of human right and democracy’ are shown notable. It can be said that each country’s identities and images are multi-layered. As for Japan, the identity of seonjinguk is manifest but it is also checked by the image of a country distorting history. As for China, the identities of ‘sinheungguk’ and ‘human right hujinguk’ are strong, which does not reach the level of seonjinguk, but it also has the image of ‘juyoguk.’ These multi-layered identities and images become factors for Koreans that bring about the senses of both superiority and inferiority towards those countries.
