Abstract

The Encarta World English Dictionary is an outcome or inevitable response to thechallenge of World Englishes. Today English is the main international language ofadvertising, travel, pop music, diplomacy, academic conferences, science andtechnology. It is estimated that English is the language of over 80 percent of theinformation stored in the world’s computers and 85 percent of Internet home pages,and that English is the first language of 68 percent of web users. The Englishlanguage has become a global resource. This paper deals with a brief history ofEnglish dictionaries and dictionary makers, the birth and characteristics of the Encarta,and its significance.
