Abstract

Since the publication of Jong-ki Lee's Garakguk-tamsa(Exploration of Gaya Kingdom) in 1977, the results of Prof. Byeong-mo Kim's archaeological research have been accepted without any criticism, and the hypothesis that the Divine Fish of Nableung (Tomb of King Suro of Gaya Kingdom) Gate originated in Ayodhya of India was taken for granted in Korea. On the other hand, scholars who deny the possibility that the Divine fish originated in Ayodhya argue that it is impossible to directly connect the Divine Fish of Nableung and the twin fish of Ayodhya because the Nableung Gate was built in the middle of Joseon Dynasty. This study critically examines the hypothesis that the Divine Fish of Nableung Gate originated in Ayodhya. To this end, first, the meaning of the Divine Fish was identified in the relief of the Nableung Gate, and in this process, we looked at the misunderstanding of the details of the relief. I tried to identify the meaning of the Divine Fish, focused on the context of the entire relief, and examined the origin as well as the characteristic style of the twin fish in Ayodhya based on the results of my field trip in Ayodhya and Faizabad. Twin fish emblem is widely distributed not only in Ayodhya but also in adjacent Faizabad, and is usually built on the main gate of old buildings. The history of the gates of the buildings suggests that Ayodhya's twin fish emblems were formed in the early 19-20th century, while Faizabad’s ones were formed in the 18th-19th century. It is unlikely that the twin fish emblem of Ayodhya buildings was introduced to Gaya Kingdom along with Huh Hwang-ok, in view of the fact that the twin fish emblem appeared in Ayodhya and Faizabad after 18th century. In addition, there are no significant similarities between the Divine Fish of Nableung Gate and the twin fish emblem of Ayodhya.
