Abstract

This study seeks to rediscover the religious meanings and values that have been largely forgotten in the modern era and to propose them as core virtues for future global citizens in the age of ecological crisis. By re-examining the religious heritage grounded in a philosophy of life, it critiques the limitations of “science” as a form of modern “religion” and explores how religion—long dismissed as irrational or superstitious—can re-emerge as a new form of “reason” in the contemporary world. In particular, the paper compares Daisaku Ikeda's philosophy of life, developed through his reinterpretation of the Lotus Sutra, a key scripture of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, with Albert Schweitzer's theology. The analysis reveals that both thinkers advocate a religious and ethical framework centered on reverence for life, and that their worldviews and practices may offer new possibilities for public ethics and solidarity in an age of ecological crisis.
