초록
Since digital games are becoming more and more diverse and complicated than before, a new typology that represents underlying features of digital games from the players’ perspective is needed to be developed as a frame of reference that can be used for future digital game development. Currently, available game typologies are mostly based on either the genre concept or the game producers’ perspective. The objective of this study is to identify the attributes of newly emerging digital games by analyzing the personal constructs employed by digital game players in assessing digital games. To explicate these personal constructs, a series of in-depth repertory grid interviews were conducted. The repertory grid technique is an inductive research method designed to elicit underlying personal constructs in the human mind. Twenty-two interviews were conducted using self-selected games as elements. A total of 1,669 statements were produced as a result. After the focus group analysis, four meta categories of attributes surfaced: game state, player structure, physical condition, and game flow, along with 29 dimensions in 12 categories. Out of 29 dimensions, 13 dimensions are new compared to the currently available typologies. The result confirms that the newly emerging digital games have different attributes than the old ones. The dimensions and attributes identified in this study can be used as guidelines in assessing and designing digital games of the future.
