Abstract
This paper aims to discern how to understand the relationship between ēthos in persuasion and parrhēsia through the story of the Three Bodyguards in 1 Esdras. As Plato and Foucault have criticized, the relationship between truth and ēthos in rhetoric seems to be at odds. However, I would like to discuss that the relationship may not be so antagonistic, but maybe complementary. For this purpose, I deal with the story of the Three Bodyguards in the book of 1 Esdras, which was presumably written in the second century BCE. The story consists of epideictic speeches of the three bodyguards with the purpose to orate what is the most superior thing in the world. Each of the three bodyguards speaks on ‘wine’, ‘a king’, and ‘woman and truth’ in the rhetorical contest. I examine two epideictic speeches of Zorobabel(the third bodyguards) in accordance with the theory of classical rhetoric. Through this analysis, I show that Zorobabel’s ēthos corresponds to the significance of parrhēsia mentioned by Foucault. I also argue that rhetoric and parrhēsia coexist as well as complement each other in Zorobabel’s rhetorical speeches. Lastly, by comparing with the usefulness of rhetoric that Aristotle pointed out, I demonstrate a complementary relationship between ēthos in persuasion and parrhēsia and its benefit implied in the story of the Three Bodyguards.
