초록
This study examines the correlation between the radicalization of Sayyid Qutb’s ideology and the interior and exterior circumstances of his homeland, Egypt. Qutb, who is also called ‘the father of modern Islamist extremism,’ was a writer and ideologue. Many extremist Islamist groups, including al-Qaeda and IS (Islamic State), are known to have inherited Qutb’s ideology. However, Qutb was not initially drawn to extremist ideologies. This study hypothesizes that Egypt’s domestic and international crises, particularly from 1948 to the 1950s, radicalized his views. This study adopts ‘bad barrel theory’ and analyzes and compares Qutb’s early and latter works to testify the hypothesis. The purpose of this study is to understand the ideological context of Qutb, who laid the foundation for modern Islamic extremism.
