The Similarities and Differences of Radicalism in Islam

이슬람의 이념을 분석하는 방법은 크게 두 가지 접근법으로 나뉠 수 있다. 서구의 전통적인 접근법으로 대표적인 것은 이슬람이 현대의 세속적 변화에 적응할 수 없다는 시각이다. 반면 이슬람이 본래의 정신적 가치를 바꾸지 않아도 자체적으로 근대화할 수 있다는 주장도 있다. 본 논문은 두 번째 접근법에 따라 이슬람 과격주의를 분석한다. 이슬람 과격주의가 시대적 상황에 따라 적응할 수 있는지 여부를 측정하기 위해서다. 이를 위해 근대 과격주의의 대표적인 세 이론가를 비교분석한다. 파키스탄 자마아티 이슬라미의 마우두디, 이집트 무슬림형제단의 쿠틉, 그리고 이집트 지하드 그룹의 파라즈의 과격주의를 비교한다. 세 이론가의 저서에 나타난 과격주의 사상을 세계관과 국가관, 국가 지도자관, 그리고 지하드에 대한 시각으로 분류해 고찰한다. 세 명의 사상은 상당히 혁명적 특성을 내포한다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이중 지하드 그룹의 이론가 파라즈의 사상을 가장 과격한 것이라고 분류할 수 있다. 파라즈의 경우 마우두디와 쿠틉에 비해 그의 개인적 성장 및 활동 배경이 상당히 어려웠다고 할 수 있다. 이런 정치적, 사회·경제적, 그리고 개인적 환경이 특정 이념에 지대한 영향을 주고 있다고 말할 수 있다. 본 연구에서 수행한 3대 과격주의 사상가의 이념과 성장배경에 대한 비교분석은 이슬람 사상이 시대적 그리고 주변적 상황에 따라 바뀌고 진화할 수 있음을 뒷받침 한다. 이슬람에서의 과격주의가 이슬람의 본질에 기인한 것이 아니라 서구의 여러 이념들처럼 특정한 정치적, 사회적, 경제적, 그리고 개인적 맥락에 큰 영향을 받고 있다고 설명할 수 있다.
