Abstract

As global competition intensifies and technological innovation accelerates, enhancing productivity and management performance in local companies is crucial for the sustainable growth of the Busan economy. In Busan, over 97% of businesses are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which limits their capabilities to penetrate international markets and improve productivity and management performance on their own. This study empirically examines the effects of strategic alliances formed by companies in Busan on productivity and management performance, providing insights for regional economic policy development. Using corporate panel data from 2006 to 2022, the analysis focused on the logarithm of intermediate goods input per worker as the dependent variable and employed regression analysis with 'firm and year fixed effects'. The findings reveal that companies engaged in strategic alliances demonstrated significantly higher productivity and management performance. Notably, only alliances with foreign firms had a positive impact. Among the different types of strategic alliances, joint investments consistently resulted in improvements in both productivity and management performance, whereas joint marketing and technology partnerships showed limited effects. These results were confirmed in robustness checks, indicating that Busan's companies, particularly those heavily involved in the global value chain, experienced strengthened benefits from alliances with foreign companies. Consequently, the study suggests that policy support is essential to foster joint investment-type alliances with foreign firms and to enhance participation in global networks, addressing the challenges of low growth in the Busan economy.
