Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the effects of a 12-week augmented reality (AR)-based spinning and fitness program, conducted as an after-school program at a community center for the disabled in G District, on the fitness and blood components of adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Ten adolescents with intellectual disabilities participating in after-school classes at a community center in rural G District were enrolled in the study. The AR-based exercise program, using products from Tago, a domestic IT company, involved imitating the movements of avatars displayed on a large monitor. Participants completed both spinning and fitness programs twice a week for 60 minutes over 12 weeks. Exercise intensity was determined using the rated intensity of exercise (RPE), a scale used to determine the level perceived as "hard." To verify the effectiveness of the AR-based exercise program, a fitness assessment was conducted, which included body composition analysis and measures of cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, power, agility, and flexibility. Blood components were analyzed for triglycerides, HDL-c, LDL-c, and fasting blood glucose. For data analysis, Spss 22.0 statistical software was used to calculate the mean and standard deviation. A dependent t-test was performed to compare differences between the two groups before and after the exercise program, with a significance level of ɑ=.05. Results showed that the AR-based exercise program significantly improved body composition (body weight, body fat percentage, BMI), fitness (cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, agility), and blood components (triglycerides, HDL-c, LDL-c, fasting blood glucose) after exercise compared to before exercise. These findings suggest that participation in an AR-based exercise program can be effective in improving or maintaining fitness and blood components in adolescents with intellectual disabilities.
