Abstract
In volleyball players, shoulder joint injuries are observed as the main pathological phenomenon due to the tendency for the exercise load to be concentrated on one arm. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the quantitive amount of muscle strength imbalance by measuring the bilateral and ipsilateral isokinetic muscle strength ratios of the dominant and non-dominant shoulder joints in male and female volleyball players, who use the shoulder joint intensively. To achieve this purpose, 13 male and female volleyball players (7 males : 15.7±0.95 yrs, 178.6±6.21 cm, 71.6±8.39 kg & 6 females 15.8±2.39 yrs, 165.2±2.39 cm, 57.5±3.98 kg) were recruited to investigate body composition and isokinetic muscle function of the shoulder joint, and thereby to observe the muscle strength ratios of the dominant and non-dominant shoulder joints. As a result, although there was no statistical difference in the muscle mass of the dominant and non-dominant upper limbs, the muscle function of the dominant side was higher than that of the non-dominant side by an average about of 10% in flexion and extension movements, respectively, which resulted in a difference in muscle strength imbalance. Similarly, the group average in the ipsilateral muscle strength ratio was close to the standard value of 60% for the dominant side and non-dominant side. Unlike these group averages, when the bilateral and ipsilateral muscle strength ratios of the subjects were individually observed, some subjects were not observed to meet the standard for the bilateral and ipsilateral muscle strength ratios. Therefore, it is necessary for coaches and athletes in the field to develop and apply a training program that complements this muscle strength imbalance.
