Abstract
Albert O. Hirschman has been known as a pioneer in development economics as well as a creative interpreter of political economic approach. This paper is written with three possible contributions in mind. Foremost aim is, by focusing on the analysis of Hirschman's work, to re-capture the meaning of import substitution industrialization(ISI) in Latin America. Second one is to critically review the role of ISI in the emergence of bureaucratic authoritarian regimes. Finally, with all of these discussions, this paper aims to provide Latin American researchers in Korea with opportunities encountering imaginative new world of Hirschman. Research reveals theoretical justification a la Hirschman for the initiation of ISI, only to be criticized during the so-called 'deepening phase' due to the abuse of the policy through over-optimistic ideological approach and the lack of respect for proper functioning of the market principle by the populist and military regimes. In conclusion, this paper finds that Hirschman provides Latin American researchers with alternative perspectives apart from two dominant orientations of modernization and dependency, and with alternative interpretation regarding the emergence and intensification of neo-liberal agony in Latin America.
