Abstract

This study applies a phenomenological approach based on landscape archaeology to reinterpret the Bronze Age settlement landscape as a multilayered and symbolic entity intertwined with human perception, experience, and identity. Particular attention is given to visual experience as a primary mode of engaging with the landscape, analyzing its social functions and symbolic meanings. The study focuses on the Bronze Age settlement of Yulha-ri in Gimhae, reconstructing the topographic and cultural landscape of the Yulha Basin and utilizing GIS viewshed analysis to interpret the multilayered significance of the visual experience of burial sites. The analysis of the Yulha-ri settlement reveals that during the early stages of increasing social complexity, burial grounds were established separately from residential areas around available farmland, with medium- to large-scale dolmen cemeteries strategically placed in locations ensuring visibility across the settlement. This spatial strategy reflects an intent to strengthen community cohesion and assert enduring land ownership through repetitive and sustained visual experiences. In the period when super-large dolmen cemeteries and ritual spaces were constructed, communal burial grounds and ceremonial sites were positioned in locations visible both within and beyond the Yulha Basin, functioning as symbolic landmarks for the regional community. The visibility of these burial sites played a role in controlling residents’ movements, recreating social relationships, and forming the settlement’s focal point.
