Abstract

This paper focuses on the contemporary encounter between SF and feminism, which took place amid the trend of popularizing Korean feminism. Considering that Korean SF writers share political and theoretical discussions and cultural trends of feminism, Korean SF novels that speculate on gender and sexuality need to be actively interpreted not only as a reflection of feminist discussions but also as a contribution to them. To this end, I will read two SF novels, “How Much Does It Resemble(2017)” by Kim Bo‐young and “The Second Nanny(2017)” by Djuna. Kim Bo‐young’s “How Much Does It Resemble” defamiliarizes the future Korean society where gender discrimination still exists through the eyes of an AI android. This shows that gender awareness is essential to escape from the violence of sameness and to affirm the differences of minorities. Djuna’s “The Second Nanny” presents girls as protagonists of an adventure story in which the girls seek new conditions of life while desiring, thinking, and acting to survive in an existing world cracked by Fathers’ violence. Through the girls, Djuna presents a new feminist figuration and seeks to reform the world as anti‐oedipal. Every world drawn by SF always has a virtual status in that it has never arrived, whether in the chronological future, present or past. This virtual world always orients itself to the future. The virtuality/futurity of SF creates a feminist alternative world, intersecting with feminism’s contemporary temporality which aspires to a better future where discrimination has disappeared and be also conscious of the past where discrimination has existed. The virtual alternative world of SF has political power in that it motivates readers to take a new look at their present world and to intervene critically in future decisions. As the genre characteristics of SF is recognized by both writers and readers as a major resource and method of feminism that seeks to change the gender power relations, the base of “Korean feminism SF” is expanding.
