Abstract

This paper examines the identity and symbolism of posthuman characters in the film <The Silenced> and the drama <Gyeongseong Creature>, both set during the Japanese occupation of Korea. These works depict the historical trauma and identity confusion experienced by female characters who, under the oppression and violence of Imperial Japan, lose their humanity and transform into transcendent beings. The two posthuman characters, Cha Ju-ran and Choi Seong-sim, are products of Japan’s brutal human experimentation, and their tragic and violent narratives symbolically reveal the realities of colonial Korea. The study argues that these posthuman characters symbolize resistance to historical oppression, the ambivalence of modernization through scientific technology, and the recovery of identity within the national community. By using conventions of the SF-horror genre, both works recall historical events to re-examine the oppressive realities of colonial Korea. The symbolic meaning revealed through the creation and vengeance of these posthuman characters highlights the oppression and violence of Imperial Japan and suggests the potential for resistance. <The Silenced> explores the oppressive reality of colonial Korea and the potential for resistance through Cha Ju-ran's transformation, emphasizing the possibility of identity recovery through solidarity. <Gyeongseong Creature> highlights Choi Seong-sim's transformation and identity recovery through motherhood, portraying her as a powerful figure opposing Imperial Japan's violence. Both works use posthuman characters to narrate resistance against Japanese imperial oppression, effectively addressing historical trauma and identity issues in colonial Korea. This paper aims to explore the symbolic meaning and identity of posthuman characters in <The Silenced> and <Gyeongseong Creature> within the historical context of colonial Korea, focusing on their narrative processes and the messages of resistance and solidarity conveyed.
