Abstract

This article aims to examine how contemporary South Korean zombie films and television series evoke precariats in the neoliberal age and suggest the ethics of the posthuman, through the analysis of director Sang-ho Yeon’s two 2016 zombie films, Seoul Station, and Train to Busan, and Netflix series, Kingdom (season 1 and 2). Following the existing understandings of zombies as the social allegory, this article conceives the zombies, which ceaselessly run and infect others by biting, as the abject posthuman. The advancement of biotechnology and networking technologies has encouraged posthumanism that seeks to transgress the existing binary boundaries such as human-nonhuman and men-women. The liberalist posthumanism, however, seems to reinforce the boundary between self and others and ignore the relations to others. In this sense, it may also be involved in the neoliberal ethic which imposes all responsibilities for their lives on individuals. Thus, the understanding of the contemporary zombies as abject posthuman is the reconsideration of neoliberal subjectivity in the digital era. The zombie’s restless desire for living bodies reifies violence in the posthuman life ethics such as the habitual collection and renewal of information and the self-improvement for survival in the neoliberal era. Moreover, zombies as the infected bodies different from ghostly existence evoke the neoliberal governmentality affecting our behavioral practices as much as our ideological beliefs. They express a somnambulist subjectivity racing ceaselessly for capitalistic desire without the recognition of history and others. Focusing on the affects that zombies as the abject posthuman provoke in Yeon’s zombie films and Kingdom series, this article also explores new posthuman ethics beyond the neoliberal ethic of survival in the contemporary S. Korean zombie genre.
