There are few cases that ‘里’, ‘中’, ‘內’ are used independently in modern Chinese. Rather, they are combined with other words and make directional phrases which indicate time and place. The directional phrases represent diverse ideas as well as are applied variously in sentences. However, there are similarities and differences among ‘里’, ‘中’, ‘內’ in concrete use. This thesis will analyze ‘里’, ‘中’, ‘內’ in modern Chinese in two points of view. One is historical origin and development. The other is an inquiry into meaning of words and language use in the case of that the directional phrases are combined with other words. The latter is studied again divided into six parts‐ combinations with noun, verb, adjective, pronoun, preposition and comparison of a style.
