『대학사변록』에 나타난 박세당의 ‘격물치지’ 해석과 주희 비판의 성격

그동안 박세당은 ‘반주자학자’ 혹은 ‘탈주자학자’로 평가되어 왔다. 이러한 평가를 뒷받침하는 자료로 취급되었던 것이『사변록』이며 그 중에서도 『대학사변록』이 가장 대표적이다. 실제로 그는 『대학사변록』에서 주희의 학설에 여러 이견을 제기했고, 주희의 작업들에 수정을 가하기도 했다. 그러나 최근 몇몇 연구자들은 『대학사변록』을 엄밀하게 분석·검토한 연구 결과를 바탕으로,『대학사변록』은 『대학』에 대한 주희의 주석이 갖는 문제점들을 지적하고 보완하려고 한 것일 뿐 주희 성리학의 이론체계를 반대하거나 그것으로부터 이탈하려는 목적으로 저술된 것이 아니라는 주장을 내놓기 시작했다. 이에 본 논문은 『대학사변록』에 나타난 ‘격물치지’에 대한 서계 박세당의 해석을 면밀하게 분석하고 검토함으로써 이에 대한 실상을 구명하고자 했다. 그 결과 적어도 『대학사변록』에 나타난 박세당의 ‘격물치지’ 해석을 통해서는 그가 ‘반주자학자’ 또는 ‘탈주자학자’로 평가받을 만한 증거를 발견할 수 없었다. 박세당이 주희의 성리학적 이론체계 자체를 부정한 사례를 『대학사변록』에서는 찾을 수 없었을 뿐 아니라, 오히려 그가 누구 못지않게 주희의 학문적 업적을 높게 평가했음을 확인할 수 있었다. 박세당이 『대학사변록』을 통해 비판적 이의를 제기한 것은 주희의 ‘격물치지설’이 『대학』의 주석으로서 적절하지 않다는 사실을 밝히고 싶었기 때문이었다.
Abstract
Park Se-dang has been regarded as an anti-Zhu xi or de-Zhu xi scholar. the sabyeonrok was treated as the supporting material for this assessment, and the Daehaksabyeonrok is the most prominent. Recently, however, several researchers presented a different view from previous assessments based on their careful analysis of Daehaksabyeonrok. Their point of view is that Park se-dang was only trying to point out and supplement the problems of Zhu xi's explanatory notes, but he was not critical of the overall theory of Zhu xi. This paper was designed to make a correct assessment of Park Se-dang by analyzing and reviewing his interpretation of the ‘Gaining knowledge by the study of things’(格物致知) on the Daehaksabyeonrok. On examination, there was no evidence that Park Se-dang would be judged as aan anti-Zhu xi or de-Zhu xi scholar, at least in his interpretation of the ‘Gaining knowledge by the study of things’ which appeared in Daehaksabyeonrok. Not only was I unable to find a case in Daehaksabyeonrok in denying the Zhu xi's philosophical theoretical system itself, but I also confirmed that he could appreciate Zhu xi's academic achievements as highly as anyone else. Park Se-dang raised a critical objection through Daehaksabyeonrok because he wanted to make it clear that Zhu xi's explanation of the ‘Gaining knowledge by the study of things’ was not appropriate as a explanatory note of the Great Learning(大學).
