Abstract
The attraction of foreign direct investment (FDI) can be seen as a direct driver of economic growth that has a significant impact on national or regional development through employment creation, economic revitalisation and the transfer of advanced technologies. The importance of FDI in the competitive system of globalisation is reflected in the fierce competition among individual countries to attract FDI. Therefore, this study examines the determinants of FDI inflows to individual countries by focusing on governance factors, which are different from the traditional factors. Although many studies have been conducted on FDI, the relationship between FDI and governance factors has been relatively under-researched. For the analysis, panel regression and system GMM analysis were conducted using panel data. The results show that improvements in governance are positive for FDI inflows, with corruption control and rule of law being particularly strong factors. However, further analysis revealed that this effect was not observed in all countries, but only in a group of advanced countries with relatively mature economies. In other words, it was differently confirmed that there is a need for a more strategic approach to attracting FDI through institutional improvements such as governance in advanced and developing countries. These results provide evidence that it is important for individual countries to continuously improve their governance environment in order to increase FDI for economic growth.
