(Timed Up & Go Test, TUG),

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the reliability and validity of the Fullerton advanced balance scale(FAB) for stroke patients. For 19 stroke patients who participated in this study, the test-retest reliability of each FAB item was identified based on kappa coefficient and the total score was identified based on the intra class coefficient(ICC) and minimal detectable change(MDC). The concurrent validity of FAB was identified based on Berg Balance Scale(BBS), Timed Up & Go Test(TUG), Fugl Meyer Assessment-Upper/Lower extremity (FMA-U/E·L/E) and Spearman Correlation Coefficient. According to the results of this study, the kappa coefficient of items 1, 6 and 8 of FAB was .77(high), and that of items 2 to 5, 7, 9 and 10 was .83 to 1(very high). The ICC score of FAB total score was .97. The internal consistency, Cronbach alpha value, was more than .86. MDC score was 1.63, which was less than 10%(3 points) of the FAB highest score of 30, showing high reliability. The concurrent validity of FAB was highly correlated(p<.001) with BBS (r=.85) and TUG(r=-.82), and moderately correlated(p<.01) with FMA-U/E(r=.58), FMA-L/E(r=.62), and FMA-total(r=.69). This means that FAB is highly reliable and valid and useful for evaluating the balance ability of stroke patients.
