Abstract
The poetry of Chinese was developed in Tang Dynasty. Wang Wei was a public servant, poet and painter. About Wang wei’s poem, once Sushi who was one of the great poets in Song Dynasty said that there is a painting image in his poems. Especially he was famous for his poems of natural poetry as well as the beginner of 南宗畵 (a Chinese painting of the Southern School) which was the technique or art of painting. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the image of retirement, transience and transcendence among Wang Wei’s works. He had had the freedom from all thoughts and ideas of a government post and had realized the vanity of life. Especially, after he was relegated to a less important post, he decided to retire to hermitage in the mountain and the countryside. His retiring place is a place which was famous for its beauty of nature. There lived farmers who was a very unusual people. There he expressed a rural landscape and mountains and waters; hills and streams through his poems. He spent the later part of his life living in transcendence. Wang Wei was a Buddhist. The period of the later part of his life, he lived like a monk. Also he wrote many 禪詩. Many people said that the more one has, the more one wants. However, he pursued to keep aloof from the world. So he had a disinterested attitude about human affairs. We can understand the consciousness of the life as an official and recluse among Wang Wei’s works. All of them have something to do with one another.
