초록
The purpose of the present study is to explore the acoustic properties of the Korean word-initial liquid in English loanwords. Adopting a corpus-based methodology, we investigate whether Korean speakers distinguish the English origin of loans – whether each word originally begins with /l/ or /ɹ/ – by examining the temporal duration of initial liquids and the spectral properties of the first three formant frequencies, and the difference between F3 and F2 (i.e., F3-F2) analyzed across gender and age groups. The results of the corpus analysis indicate that a significantly low F3-F2 difference was observed in a subset of speakers but origin by itself did not reach overall statistical significance, suggesting that Korean speakers marginally differentiate their production based on the original English liquids and they exhibit liquids as variations in their speech when producing loanwords.
