초록

This paper examines Semantically Unlike Nominal Coordination (SUNC) in English and Tagalog. In SUNC constructions, one conjunct is semantically compatible with the verb while the other is not. Although previous research has reported that SUNC can be permitted in languages such as Korean (Lee 2025a) and Vietnamese (Lee 2025b), the present acceptability judgment experiments suggest otherwise for English and Tagalog. The findings reveal that these languages tend not to permit such constructions, as sentences containing semantically mismatched conjuncts received consistently low acceptability ratings. These results indicate that both English and Tagalog impose a strict requirement that all conjuncts be semantically compatible with the verb. Ultimately, this study contributes to cross-linguistic research on coordination by demonstrating how semantic constraints on coordinated constructions vary across languages.
