초록

“Modern Taiwanese literature” has, in fact, long been known as a rather unfamiliar field even to those of us who study modern Chinese literature. However, in the late 1970s, the nativist literature debate arose in Taiwan, and as its content became known to us, we began to develop a new understanding of Taiwanese literature. This interest was further stimulated by its connection to the 1960s debate on national literature in Third World literature in Korea, as well as the discussions on Third World literature that began to emerge in mainland China from the mid-1980s. The purpose of this academic conference is, prior to engaging in in-depth studies or discussions of Taiwanese literature, to lay the foundational groundwork for understanding what Taiwanese literature actually is.
