Abstract

This study examined how motivations for permanent wave treatments affect aging anxiety among women in their 50s and 60s in Gwangju Metropolitan City, and analyzed the moderating effects of social support sub-factors in this relationship. The main findings are as follows. First, motivations for undergoing permanent wave treatments directly alleviated aging anxiety. All sub-factors of motivation—enhancing appearance, maintaining a youthful look, grooming efficiency, and psychological recovery—had significant negative effects on aging anxiety, indicating that hair styling services contribute to psychological stability and anxiety relief in middle age beyond mere external beautification. Second, sub-factors of social support showed distinct moderating effects on the relationship between treatment motivation and aging anxiety. Emotional and material support moderated the relationship between appearance-enhancement motivation and aging anxiety; informational support moderated the relationship between grooming-efficiency motivation and aging anxiety; and evaluative support moderated the relationship between youthful-appearance motivation and aging anxiety. These results suggest that alleviating aging anxiety among middle-aged and older adults requires an organic integration of individual aesthetic pursuits with multidimensional social support from their surroundings.
